Every Day Carry 101 - EDC Origins [Episode 28]

Updated: Apr 4

Let me start with a mic drop: Women started EDC.

That’s it. That’s the theory. End of post.

…Okay, not really. But stick with me because I’m about to unpack it like a mom unzipping her bottomless Mary Poppins purse at a kids’ soccer game.

The Origins of EDC: A Hot Take with Hotter Truth

Sure, the everyday carry (EDC) world today looks like a testosterone-fueled gear expo—multitools, flashlights, knives, pry bars, tactical pens, and a budget blown faster than a toddler spotting candy. But let’s be honest—moms were the original gear junkies.

Picture this: You’re at the park with your 8- and 10-year-old. One’s losing a remote control car battle and the other is grass-staining their last clean shirt. In a flash (pun intended), Mom reaches into her purse and produces not only batteries but a screwdriver alternative to fix the remote. Boom. Crisis averted. Soccer resumes. Juice boxes are served. That, my friends, is EDC in action.

While modern EDC is usually pocket-sized and metal-clad, women have been carrying survival kits in their bags forever—just without the “tactical” branding. First aid? Check. Snacks? Check. Portable pharmacy? Check. Backup plan for the backup plan? You bet.

Why It Matters (and Why It’s Time to Lighten the Load)

As gear gets smaller, smarter, and more multi-functional, it’s time more women joined the EDC world—not just in practice, but in representation. Let’s retire the 50-pound “mom purse” and swap it out for sleek, efficient, lighter EDC gear that actually works with you.

Also, have you ever tried to arm wrestle a woman who's been carrying a toddler on one hip and a diaper bag on the other for years? They’re stronger than most gym bros. Respect the EDC matriarchs.

A New Category in the Warfare Series: Modern EDC for All

To kick off this fresh dive into EDC, I’m introducing a new sub-series in our Warfare lineup dedicated to modern, minimalist, and female-friendly everyday carry gear. Yes, fellas, you can stay too—innovation doesn’t discriminate.

Let’s start with my new love: the Leatherman Arc. It's sleek, powerful, and yes, customized with my handle (because obviously). Between that and my trusty Knipex wrench, I’ve condensed a whole Maxpedition loadout into something fanny-pack friendly. My back thanks me.

If you want to check out either one, I’ve linked both tools and a few of my favorite EDC picks here:👉 amazon.com/shop/drvirga

Whether you’re a parent, a prepper, or just someone who likes being very ready for weirdly specific emergencies, EDC isn’t just for dudes with toolboxes anymore. It's for everyone who refuses to be unprepared.

Coming Soon...

Over the next few episodes, I’ll be reviewing my favorite flashlights, multi-tools, and budget-friendly alternatives for building your own EDC setup. This isn't gatekeeping—this is gear freedom for all.

So if you're ready to join the revolution—or at least lighten your purse—stay tuned.

EDC: Inspired by moms, upgraded for everyone.
